Please give Rec some feedback on this year's keynote speaker event, but please make sure it wasn't already mentioned in class. If you don't have any additional feedback, it's fine.
Feedback given in class
Speaker
-Didn't understand lynbrook culture and perspective, maybe choose different topic
-speech was unconnected, similar to Miller
-didn’t really touch on stress
-speaker shut down students who were trying to talk
-repetition of speaker isn’t good, people remembered the same things
-not around stress in comparison to bullying
Assembly in general
-good event, provided a platform for students to honestly talk about issues
-students didn’t want to wake up for it
-people disliked it because they had to wake up early
-too long assembly
-act of bringing student body for a communal discussion is a good step forward
-should continue, consider more often
-no schedule in several years, not the norm. (which is why students may have been upset)
-challenge day is similar but on a more personal level
-don't put assembly at the end of grading period
This is something I heard from Jennifer personally and thought it would be very beneficial. We should tell teachers privately to have students leave behind all their backpacks behind so that they don't take out their homework or laptops, or other distracting objects during the assembly. Phones would make it too blatant and would be hard to regulate anyways, so I think that this would improve focus and respect to the speaker!
ReplyDeleteTo expand on what Sally was saying, Ms. Dunlap made all her students leave their belongings in the classroom and their phones on top of their desks. Although everyone was really annoyed, I feel like people paid attention.
DeleteOne thing that didn't get mentioned in class is if this were to happen again, I would consider telling teachers next time to be scanning their own classes for people who are on their phones. Some were doing that anyways, but for students that weren't in their own classes, which made it a little awkward.
ReplyDeleteAgreed on what sally said about backpacks and homework - I saw someone in the middle of the bleachers with their entire laptop out working - not even discreetly LOL.
Overall, great event IMO :)
Comments from here on out, for this post, will not be graded.
